I'm creating this thread as a place to share information and actual videos from the DXR (Drive eXperience Recorder) available on the Scat Pack.

First, it saves videos to the USB A port in the center console under the armrest. The USB Drive needs to be formatted (AFAIK) to exFAT with a total of less than 512K Allocation Units. I have had success of Allocation Unit SIZE (larger the size, less total number) of 256KB on a 128GB drive, and 128KB on a 64GB drive. If your drive fails with this
Image

Insert it on a PC and do a CHKDSK from a command prompt on it
This is one of mine that works, a 128GB Sandisk drive.
120171520 KB total disk space.
6467584 KB in 12 files.
1024 KB in 4 indexes.
0 KB in bad sectors.
512 KB in use by the system.
113702400 KB available on disk.

262144 bytes in each allocation unit.
469420 total allocation units on disk.

444150 allocation units available on disk.
I underlined the important parts. The first is what you chose when your format it. The second is a result of what you choose. Basically it is
1 - "how small can the smallest file be"
or
2 - "How much space is wasted when I make a tiny 1k file"
which is 1 - "Not very" and 2 - "A TON"
But none of that matters since it isn't making small files, they are huge gigantic files. at 1080 resolution (highest available and not that great...) It is using that much data in 16th a second (I think, doesn't matter)
End result is .14GB a minute. Or 7 min per GB. So a 128GB drive (which only has 120GB) has enough space for about a 2 hour loop of video. (I think, I may have mathed that up wrong)

The audio on them sucks, it stutters every second or two. I assume/hope/guess it is because it is constantly able to close the file? It picks up all internal sounds to the car. Fratzonic, talking, media playing... So if you plan to post takeover videos or something, kill that AC/DC blasting or you won't get monetized!
I'll post a clip of traffic I recorded yesterday in a bit.
This is the first video with sounds I did.

A drive last night. You can see the "Attitude Lighting" as well.
FWIW, about the 2:10 mark is where Jay Leno fell down the hill. Glad he's OK. Wonder if he has one yet.

When driving in "Auto" or Custom with setting to Street, you don't notice it other than startup/shutdown. In Sport It overall is quite nice. Off throttle it sounds like a real carb engine, but not obnoxious. Track and Drag, yeah, they drone and get annoying at constant speed, but that is exactly what they weren't designed for.
In the DXR app it does show overlay type info in the settings. I am assuming, but who know until I test, that they show up in Drag or Track modes only, and/or only on a recognized Track/Strip? I'll play some more.

...
What drive mode have you settled into using on a regular basis?
Custom, with everything at default, same as Auto, but with Powertrain (Performance?) set to Sport, not Street. So like Sport mode throttle and sound but will full nannies/traction control and still softest ride (which isn't soft, still sporty).
Speaking of, I'd love to ride in an R/T sometime as well to compare. They have softer springs then even a Scat Pack without Track Pack, but not sure about the dampers.

It will record telemetry and performance statistics to the screen. But only in Race Modes (Track and Drag).
Now if you aren't on an official race track, you can "create your own". But since it records data on the screen, of your video, I'd need a non public road to try, other than my driveway of course. But I can confirm it does work.

Also FWIW, the front 2 USB-C ports seem to only recognize FAT32. I will test the USB-A port some more, and it might be the allocation unit quantity more than FAT32 vs exFAT.

Has a maximum storage size been determined. I have decided to go the MicroSD adapter and high read/write endurance MicroSD card, like those I use in my 8K cameras.

I am hoping it accepts 256GB or larger, maybe up to 1TB?

Also, while reviewing the files stored on my thumb drive, I noticed something else.
When remote starting the car, the dash cam also starts recording. I thought it was a failed video, just plain blah white screen, for minutes. Then I scrolled to the end, and it was a still video out the windshield. Scroll, scroll, AHA, SNOW. It was when I remote started the car to warm it up. Windshield was covered with snow, and it finally melted and slid down the windshield, all on video.
I don't know if that is only when using the app to start it. I'll try to remember to try the keyfob some time.
Also, for those just getting a car, here is what I found to get a USB working in the center console for DXR storage.
Fight the fight now ahead of time, so you have it working when you need or want it.

My next test will be a thumb drive with multiple partitions. I want to see if I can have 1 drive, with a partition that the uConnect will recognize (media/screenshots/data download) and another partition that the DXR will recognize for specific recordings that are pre-planned. Currently I have a tiny one in the front with media on it. And I have a 64gb normal thumb drive in the console recording as Dash Cam. I also have another duplicate just like it connected to the keychain type loop so I can swap to a fresh one in case I want to for any reason, like on a long drive, something happening I don't want to get overwritten.
Currently I'm using 2x64gb drives in the console.
Each should hold about 6-7 hours of recording. My largest file is 64 minutes long and is 8.55 GB (9,187,229,696 bytes) on disk.
My 64gb drive is actually this size
Image

Mathing that out, 64 minutes, 8.55gb= .133GB/Min
57.2GB/.133=430ish minutes or just over 7 hours.
BUT!
I checked properties of the 4 largest files, and the data rate varies, so
Image

VLC show this as the codec
Image

Also, it appears to insert a "Title" into the metadata based on the recording time.
The ones I've noticed are
Morning Drive
Afternoon Drive
Evening Drive

OK, Some more info from testing this morning.

I have a 128 GB tiny USB A thumb drive. I use it for media via a tiny90° down angle USB C to USB A adapter. I keep that in the front ports for media, and screenshots. I had a 32gb partition on it Fat 32 that the front uConnect ports recognized fine. The console USB A port (AFAIK) only reads exFAT with limited number of allocation units.
So for kicks, I created and formatted a 2nd partition on that 128 GB drive. I formatted it exFAT with 256k sized allocation units.
My PC recognizes both partitions with different drive letters. The part in BOLD is just the Volume Label I chose.
Image

Then I stuck that thumb drive into the console USB A port and went for a drive. Then I unplugged it, put it in the adapter and into the front port. I put my usual 64GB normal sizzed thub drive back into the console port and drove home. DXR showed recording both times, and media played from the one in the front, and I saved a screenshot.
Then I checked both drives at home.
Both drives had a recorded dashcam video on them! And the one with 2 partitions also had a screenshot recorded on it from that drive.
SO
TLDR - A dual partitioned drive can be used for either the front or the back ports separately (but not simultaneously (dang I spelled that right first time!))

One new thing I noticed is that I got a message that it couldn't record since the drive is full. I swapped thumb drives and it worked, but I swear I saw a setting for having it auto delete. Now I can't find that. Oh well, I'll look again later.

And info I just got directly from Dodge
"To record and export DXR data the USB-A stick that goes into the center console needs to be formatted in exFAT. We greatly appreciate your feedback and are working on a DXR Quick Start Guide to share with owners to ensure this info is clearly communicated moving forward. "
Just make sure you choose an appropriate allocation unit size.

So I picked up a PNY Pro Elite V3 1TB. Just plugged it in without checking it first on a PC just to see how DXR would handle it. It had no problem with it.

Turns out this flash drive is pre-formatted as exFAT, so you don't have to do anything to it. DXR recorded to it just fine, although a single 29 minute 39 second drive resulted in 3 files, and an error popped up on the screen twice about 3 minutes in saying a system error occurred. The resulting recordings were 3:17, 0:01, and 26:21. The 26:21 recording came in at 4.7GB (5,002,898,356 bytes). At that rate, DXR can save about 88 hours on a 1TB flash drive, which is close enough to the estimate by DXR shown in the screenshots - 5,545 minutes (92 hours 25 minutes).

Here's the info on the 26:21 recording:

That said, the video it produces is junk. It's horribly pixelated, making it virtually impossible to make out a plate number on a passing vehicle. I can't even make out plate numbers on vehicles directly in front of me.

Yay, a potato cam.

It also constantly stutters every second as if it's dropping a frame, which is most apparent when sitting at an intersection with cars crossing its path.

The audio recording is fine for what it is. I did notice a brief cutout that I recall another poster pointing out, but in my recording, the cutout was actually Apple Music cutting out, not the audio recorded by DXR.

I had a 1080p dashcam about 6 years ago that performed far better, and before that I had a 720p dashcam that looked just as good. For a dashcam that is built into the car in 2024, it's bad enough that the best resolution it can provide is 1080p, but even more disappointing is that there are no options whatsoever to overlay info over the video unless you are in track or drag drive modes. This is a feature that every dashcam I have ever owned provided. For all drive modes, it should at the very least have options to include date/time, speed, direction, and GPS coordinates.

I'll be mounting my Vantrue N4 Pro as soon as I get a replacement mount for it (my previous mount was somehow damaged when I removed it from my Challenger's windshield). I'll set it to 1080p and will post some side-by-side comparisons later.

Edit: oh yeah, one more thing: it picks up reflections of the dashboard off the windshield. A simple surround that basically enclosed it flush to the windshield would have prevented this.

HA! What a coincidence! I just bought a PNY Pro Elite V3 yesterday, when I was picking up a camera at Best Buy.

AND! I have a Vantrue E360 (two in fact) sitting on the floor in my office, waiting for me to get off my a%% and do an install video on both the Daytona and the Z4.

Thanks for sharing this!

@Phooey any advice on the Vantrue installation?

I didn't expect I'd be following this up so soon - my Vantrue mount arrived shortly after I posted earlier today. So I made a video. :)

Seeing the two videos together really highlights how blurry the DxR is. Also, the DxR appears to be zoomed in quite a bit, which makes the car appear to be moving much slower than it really is.

First the good and odd news.
When viewing the recordings IN the car via the DXR app itself, you can toggle the drive telemetry overlay on and off.
Not sure how that works, if it is a different "layer" on the video, or data saved in a sub stream and the app generates the overlay? I will mess with that later.
Now the odd news
@DodgeCares
How did I happen to record video 2 years ago?
Image

I have only 1 video from 10/2023. I'm assuming that was a unit test. On to your bigger point.. The exported DXR videos don't have the overlay. If you watch it in the car, its there, but need a magnifier to read any of the text on the overlay gauges. These clips are worthless, IMO, without the overlay.

Ah, new revelation to me.
From info I found, and posted here
(8) What am I irked about today thread | Dodge Charger Daytona Forum

I downloaded it, made an account, signed in.
It looks like you copy the files that were recorded on your usb drive (via cloud is one way) and it takes the data that the car app can see.
Very interesting. Would have been nice to know this earlier.

Update: I was able to upload clips to my Onedrive. This app lets you pull in from there. When I view an outing, it shows 2 video windows, but its the same video. I get an error when trying to export the outing with the Overlay on it.

Trying to post the video leading up the ticket, showing the Power Shot that got me busted.

I guess you can't really get in trouble for it, you already got a ticket, so not like you are going to incriminate yourself. ?!?
